WWLH Presence by Steve ( Redfoxhead ) Owens

What is Whitewater Longhunter Presence?
WWLH Presence is a review, a critique, an account of an event where Whitewater Longhunters were present. ….who went to an event. ….what they did while they were there. ….how was the organization of the event. ….what was good about it. ….what was wrong with it. WWLH Presence could be anything. WWLH Presence is pretty much my ramblings concerning an event where a Whitewater Longhunter (or Longhunters and/or Longhuntresses) attended and participated and my perception of that event. Take it for what it’s worth (this AND a dollar will get you a cup of coffee), it’ll be my opinion (which may not necessarily express the position of management).
Obvious topics for WWLH Presence would be a recap of the Spring, Fall, or Winter Blackpowder Shoots (our own Whitewater Rendezvouses). It could be an overview of the NRLHF’s Southeastern Primitive Rendezvous or the Alafia in Florida or Frontier Days at Toulouse or Friendship in Indiana or the Ranger pack-in or a woodswalk some of us attended or a trip out West….it could be damn near anything. The only (loose) criteria is that someone from Whitewater went and what we thought about it. Good, bad or ugly (did I already say it was only my opinion?).
That said, now a disclaimer. If I overlook someone that was at an event, I am sorry. Please know that the omission of your name was not intentional (bear in mind that there may be cases where anonymity could be preferable to notoriety). If I neglect to mention something that occurred at that event, I am sorry. Space may not permit the inclusion of every detail and I can’t be everywhere at once. I am not “reporting” on this event, I am “reflecting” on my experience there. In the course of my reflections of an event, errors may be made. ….get over it.
It is the purpose of these ramblings to apprise those that didn’t get to attend an event of the goings-on at that particular event. Perhaps you’ve considered attending a certain event but haven’t fully decided whether to go or not. This could either bolster your intention to go next year or confirm the validity of your vacillation (stop snickering, and go look it up). Maybe you have concerns about the logistics of a site, the route to get there, or the degree of difficulty involved in participating once at an event. It is my hope that these humble ramblings will paint a mental picture for the reader that will quell those (perhaps unfounded) anxieties. For those whose situation prevented them from attended a desired event, this page may offer them a limited means by which to vicariously experience the object of their desire that their circumstances nixxed (don’t try to look it up, I’m not sure you can “–ed” the word nix….if nix is a word anyway).
A note to those “other-than-Whitewater-Longhunter” readers of this page: If I am reviewing/critiquing/reflecting on “your” event, please accept my words in the spirit in which they are written. My analysis of my experience at “your” event is recorded to help us (Whitewater Longhunters) improve “our” events. My up-to-the-heavens praise of one aspect of “your” event may be immediately followed by an apocalyptic-level damnation of another aspect at the same event. Both the commendation and the condemnation of various occurrences at “your” event are written to assist us (Whitewater Longhunters) in our quest for the perfect buckskinning/rendezvousing/living history/longhunter experience. We want to verify what we are already doing right (especially confirmed when we see it working at other events), we want to emulate what we see other groups doing right (and incorporate those practices into “our” own events), and we want to avoid making the mistakes that we have experienced at other events (yes, there have been faux pas that we don’t desire to perpetuate). Please consider these comments as constructive criticisms since most folks will not be bold enough to tell you what they didn’t like about “your” event. ….they’ll just quit coming.
So, for what it’s worth, this is WWLH Presence. Check every week or two for a new page posting. See where Whitewater Longhunters have been, read about what they did while they were there (safe bets are cookin’ & eatin’ during the day and drinkin’ & tellin’ lies at night) and revel in what was good (and not so good) about the event as we step back (k-c-a-b) in time. See y’all around the fire with a cold libation. Bon chance, mon ami.
Your Most Humble and Obedient Servant,
Steve Owens
